Donkey Down Camping is situated in a peaceful location with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, offering a relaxing escape just a short distance from the vibrant seaside town of Weymouth. This makes it an ideal spot for anyone seeking the balance of rural tranquillity with easy access to the coast. The site welcomes both children and dogs, creating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere perfect for families, couples and solo travellers alike.
Set on the historic South Dorset Ridgeway, this non-electric grass campsite provides a laid-back, hassle-free camping experience in beautiful natural surroundings. It's just a 10-minute drive or a scenic 50-minute walk to the iconic Jurassic Coast.
Facilities include excellent eco toilets and hot showers available 24 hours a day. Composting toilet blocks and urinals are located across the site, while indoor hot showers, drinking water taps, washing-up sinks and a hot water dispenser help make your stay more comfortable. Please note, there are no facilities for emptying chemical toilet cartridges. Cleanliness is a priority, with the facilities regularly maintained and accessible at all hours. Hand sanitiser stations and rubbish bins are also provided for guest convenience.
A bar and café operate on-site when weather and demand allow and fire pits are available for hire, with logs sold on-site. Staying true to its eco-conscious ethos, Donkey Down Camping encourages the responsible use of campfires and barbecues. Guests are asked to keep them raised off the ground and exercise care at all times. There's also a large 9m by 7m stretch tent available for guests to use, offering shelter during bad weather or shade on hot days. Local food retailers can deliver to site.
The site’s location within the South Dorset Ridgeway, part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, places it in a landscape rich with ancient history. With more Neolithic and Stone Age scheduled monuments than the Stonehenge or Avebury complexes in neighbouring Wiltshire, this area has long been a gathering place for communities celebrating and connecting with the land. Donkey Down continues that tradition, offering a unique and peaceful setting to unwind and reconnect with nature. Places to visit include:
Dorset Museum & Art Gallery.
The Keep Military Museum.
National Trust - Hardy's House Max Gate.
The Tutankhamun Exhibition.
Maumbury Rings Roman Amphitheatre.
