Venturing into Dartmoor might remind one of stepping through the annals of history and fables, landing somewhere amidst the narrative of The Hound of the Baskervilles. This territory has largely evaded the touch of contemporary times, with its remoteness and enveloping fogs lending an aura of enigma and excitement; it’s certain to awaken even the most dormant of imaginations.
Situated within this undulating rural wilderness is Runnage Farm. Spanning 220 acres, the Coaker family has tended to this land since 1843, well before the celebrated detective of Baker Street embarked on his renowned investigation.
The Coakers prioritise farm management yet are glad to provide a modest, untamed campsite equipped with a few modern comforts. Absent are designated spots or connections; instead, campers find two meadows beside the river, offering liberty to explore as they wish. Children delight in the enchanting expanse, engaging in games like Pooh Sticks by the river, observing the horses and frolicking in the brook. Meanwhile, adults seeking a reprieve can relax amid the serene backdrop of pastoral harmony and the soothing cadence of running water.
Postbridge is a wonderful collection of houses, farms and smallholdings. It takes its name from the famous clapper bridge for which it is perhaps best known. About 150 people live in homes that make up the village built all are spread out over quite a distance. Residents who live in smaller collections of dwellings, such as Bellever and Challacombe, and more remote places like Parsons Cottage and Stannon also consider themselves a part of Postbridge making the village about 4 miles long and a mile wide! Although there is no centre of the village in the traditional sense, the bridges, the post office and stores and the East Dart (local pub) are certainly the focus for visitors and residents alike. St. Gabriel's church and the village hall all within walking distance of Runnage Farm, about 15-20 minutes. Isolated at altitude is the famous Warren House Inn, a more strenuous walk of about 2 miles.
