Stretching from Derby's outskirts to the River Mersey, the Trent & Mersey Canal covers 93 miles, showcasing the North Midlands' stunning landscapes, including breathtaking views of the Cheshire Plains. While narrow boaters often enjoy the waterway and abundant wildlife, the canal's towpath also offers a splendid route for cyclists. Adding to the appeal for those who prefer solid ground, Oakwood Marina along the canal has introduced camping facilities.
Oakwood Marina, with its extensive canal frontage accommodating up to 90 narrow boats, also features a campsite sprawling across nearly 30 acres of gently sloping land beside the water. The Wilder family, proprietors of the marina, embrace a natural approach to managing the campsite, allowing the meadows to flourish in their natural state, only mowing for hay a few times a year and maintaining paths through the grass to explore the area and a nearby lake, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
The marina hosts five luxurious, fully furnished Bell Tents within its tranquil setting, each decorated to enhance your stay with comfortable double beds, plush memory foam mattresses and cosy 13.5 tog duvets. Adding to the comfort, the tents are equipped with bedside tables, battery-operated lights, rugs and blankets, accommodating up to two children under 12 for a small fee, with guests providing bedding for the little ones please.
Facilities include toilets and showers in the main marina building, alongside a quaint shop and tearooms, with outdoor picnic tables. Additional conveniences near the campsite encompass extra toilets, washing stations and drinking water taps. Dutch ovens are available for hire and barbecue hampers for sale to indulge in some campfire culinary experiments.
Also available are 15 wild camping pitches nestled in 25 acres of idyllic Cheshire countryside, offering tranquility and picturesque views. These pitches, which are not accessible by car and lie around 200 metres from vehicle access, offer a true escape, with luggage and equipment transported via quadbike and trailer.
For campervan enthusiasts, there are five pitches with electric hook-ups. The location is a haven for walkers, cyclists and bird watchers, with excellent circular walks and bike routes starting directly from the marina. Nearby attractions include the iconic boat lift, scenic picnic spots, Delamere Forest and Tatton Park, all within a 15-minute drive.
Oakwood Marina offers the rental of two charming day boats for those eager to explore the waters. Additionally, our tea room welcomes both boaters and visitors who simply wish to enjoy the beauty of the countryside. Whether you're interested in taking your dog for a stroll through the fields or prefer to relax and observe the serene movement of boats, we provide the perfect setting for a peaceful day out. Please be aware that the tearoom is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the pizza hut and bar are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, limiting on-site dining options on these days.
Situated along the Trent & Mersey Canal, our location serves as an ideal starting point for a variety of canal cruising adventures in the North West. It's the perfect spot for embarking on the circular journeys of the Cheshire Ring and Four Counties Ring, or for setting off on there-and-back trips to Llangollen or Chester. Additionally, for those looking to explore further, the renowned Anderton Boat Lift, which provides access to the River Weaver, is conveniently located just across town in Northwich.
